Post-Universiade San Paulo stadium to host Diamond League meet

16 January 2020

NAPLES – The majestic San Paolo Stadium, home to Italian football club Napoli, that was renovated for the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade is now all set to host one of the top global athletics events – a Diamond League meet.

The Diamond League meet which was originally scheduled to take place in Rome on 28 May this year, has been moved to Naples as Rome’s Stadio Olimpico is unavailable ahead of this year’s UEFA European championships. The Italian capital will host four Euro 2020 matches including the opening game on June 12. The Italian athletics federation announced that the fifth of the 15-meet series this year will be staged in the Stadio San Paolo in Naples.

The San Paulo stadium, which can host 55,000 spectators, had undergone a major renovation for last summer’s Universiade. It was the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Universiade 2019.
