FISU President awarded an honorary doctorate by Lviv State University of Physical Culture

FISU President Leonz Eder attended the Academic Council at Lviv State University of Physical Culture.

Leonz Eder travelled to Lviv to mark the 30th anniversary of the International Scientific Conference “Young Sports Science of Ukraine” and the 80th anniversary of Lviv State University of Physical Culture.

The International University Sports Federation and Lviv State University joined forces to celebrate key university sports milestones in Ukraine. FISU President Leonz Eder and General Administration Manager Natalya Kosterna made sure to acknowledge the past, but also to look to the future, securing interest in FISU’s programmes and future events.

On top of attending these important university celebrations, they therefore also met with the President of the Ukrainian University Sports Federation, Deputy Minister Andrii Vitrenko; the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Vitalii Lavrov; and Maksym Kozytskyy, Head of Administration at the Lviv Regional State Administration.

A holistic approach

During their exchanges, the Rector of the Ivan Boberskyi Lviv State University of Physical Culture, Yaroslav Svyshch emphasised the holistic approach of his university’s degree programmes that shapes the comprehensive development of young students.

Leonz Eder highlighted importance of FISU’s Healthy Campus Programme and encouraged the university’s administration to join the initiative aimed at increasing student’s health and wellbeing on campus.

Following his presentation, the Lviv State University of Physical Culture awarded the FISU President an honorary doctorate (Dr.h.c.) in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of university sports worldwide.

Future international student sport events in Lviv?

During the reception hosted by the Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, Maksym Kozytskyy insisted on the importance of sports for the city and the region and expressed his hope that international student sport events could be held in Lviv in the future. FISU President Eder was then able to get a first and look at the institution’s multisport facilities, which were also recently visited by IAAF President Sebastian Coe.

Finally, the FISU delegation met with SSUU President Andrii Vitrenko and Secretary General Vadym Stetsenko to discuss participation in the 2026 FISU events as well as next year’s Changchun 2027 Winter Universiade.
