Student athletes to set sail in Cherbourg

Sailing 30 August 2018

Region takes pride in its nautical sports culture

CHERBOURG — The world’s best student sailors will be arriving in Cherbourg, to compete in the World University Sailing Championship from 1-5 September, 2018. Ten top sailing nations of the world will be represented by 90 athletes in this competition, namely: Australia, South Korea, Italy, China, Singapore, Netherlands, Austria, Japan, Spain and hosts France.

With a 640km beautiful coastline, the Normandy region of France has a strong nautical sports culture. There are 80 sport leagues, around 8,000 clubs and 700,000 registered members participating in sport in the region. The Region is applying to be one of the support bases during the 2024 Olympics, so it will be a perfect setting for future Olympians to be flexing their sails.

The competition starts with an Opening Ceremony on the evening of 31 August. Sailing instructions can be found here and in the meanwhile, here is a great video to watch before the WUC Sailing is declared open.
