Technical Ingenuity bombards Audience at Universiade Opening

7 July 2013

KAZAN While the focus was on the Opening Ceremony of the 27th Summer Universiade – World University Games and its glamour, exotic dancing and Russian patriotism, it’s easy to forget just how much preparation went into the set-up of the stage that we stared at in amazement for nearly five hours.

The transformed stadium depicted an almost spaceship-like scene at its centre, as state-of-the-art equipment and technologies were used to provide a spectacle that none of the 45,000 spectators are likely to soon forget.

Four supporting arch structures of more than 500 tonnes each branched their way up from each corner of the stadium, connecting 60m up in the air above the centre of the field. A circular projection screen totalling 2,400 square meters below 1,500 meter-long LEDs illuminated the arena, with the audience required to use their 3D glasses at times to view the amazing scenes projected on the magnificent structure.

Giant mobile screens covering 1,600 square meters were raised and lowered from the supporting structures, where 96 projectors illustrated colourful backgrounds and breathtaking scenery throughout the event.

On the field itself, a 1,800 square meter revolving stage surrounded by a 300 meters cubed pool held dancers, actors and singers which wowed the audience all evening, as floats, drummers and performers circled the track, depicting the rich history and culture of the Russian people.

To cap it all off, a total of 4,500 fireworks lit up the entire stadium as the four supporting arch structures became branches to light a seven-meter cauldron, depicting the Universiade’s torch which will burn above the stadium for the duration of the event.
