2011 WU Update: CSU Visit in Erzurum – Day 1

The FISU Supervision Committee for the Winter Universiade travelled to Erzurum, Turkey, host city of the 2011 edition for a two days inspection and working visit. Led by CSU Chair Kairis Ulp, the group, composed by Vice-Chair Leonz Eder, EC Member Marian Dymalski, CTI Chair Roger Roth and WU Director Milan Augustin was accompanied also by Ana Radonjic and Miroslav Hribljan, FISU IT consultants. Due to professional reasons the CSU members Oleg Matytsin and Robert Philips could not attend the inspection visit.

At the beginning of the first plenary meeting Mr. Yunus Akgul, General Coordinator of the WU and newly appointed General Director in the Turkish Ministry of Youth and Sport expressed his pleasure for the fact that as the Universiade comes closer the delegates from FISU will visit Erzurum more often. Kairis Ulp explained the aims of the CSU visit as follows:

• to check the progress of the construction of the venues;
• to inspect the hotels, renovation and construction of the Athletes’ Village, venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Accreditation Center, MPC and IPC;
• FISU IT consultants to meet the Erzurum IT Department to set up goals and plans for a constructive cooperation;
• to discuss the Erzurum OC progress report;
• to exchange the experiences from the Harbin 2009 Winter Universiade;
• to approve the first draft of the Competition Schedule.

After the presentation of the progress report and a question and answer session from which the CUS was very satisfied, the inspection tour started to the FISU Hotel and some other hotels foreseen for referees, judges and media people, followed by the visit of the Football stadium which will held the Opening and the Closing Ceremonies and the location of the planned Athletes’ village. In the University Campus new buildings for hosting 1,500 resp. 1,000 athletes and officials will be constructed. In this campus nearly 10,000 students live at the moment. The Atatürk University of Erzurum has about 38,000 students. The OC will recruit 2011 volunteers, so far already 1,428 students have applied for being volunteers. The construction of most of the venues should be finished by October 2010 in order to be tested accordingly before the 2011 Winter Universiade.
