With three months to go for the start of the 2020 World University Championship season, preparations are in full swing at the first few Championships that will take place. In the Netherlands, Olympic champion speed skater Esmee Visser is helping to create quite a buzz as ambassador of the World University Speed Skating Championship to be held in Amsterdam from 10-13 March 2020.
The Netherlands have a long and proud history in speed skating and the local Organising Committee is confident that this championship will be a huge success.
“With the WUC Speed Skating in Amsterdam, we have a chance to make sure this tournament, as well as student speed skating in general, gets the attention it deserves,” said Ronald Ligtenberg, President of the Organising Committee of the 2020 WUC Speed Skating.
“The amount of countries that have registered is incredible and exceeds all expectations,” he added.
There are 23 countries represented among the registered athlete and according to the OC, the interest level was so high that in some cases, the student athlete themselves contacted their respective National University Sports Federations to ensure they could compete in Amsterdam.
“It feels good to see athletes making such efforts to compete in a tournament we are organising,” said Marijn Boersma, member of the Organising Committee. “With twenty-three participating countries, we have exceeded the registrations from all previous editions. I cannot wait to see all these people from different countries come together here in Amsterdam. It promises to be an amazing week.”
