Championships 7 September 2016

AKITA – Yesterday, 7 September, the 4th edition of the World University Waterski Championship was officially opened in the Akita Prefecture, Japan. In welcoming all, FISU EC member Byon Jin YOU highlighted the need in these troubled times to uphold basic human values, build teamwork and promote fairness.

The giant Namaghe creatureAgainst the background of traditional Ocarina pipe music and drums loud enough to wake the dead, the giant Namaghe festival creature of the nearby Oga area is thought to bring great harvests, good health and luck to the villagers. No doubt the athletes also hoped that they too will get some help from the Namaghe at this championship.

The final list of participating countries includes Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia and USA.

Today’s programme will see the first preliminary series in Men’s Slalom and Men’s and Women’s Tricks kicking off.
