FISU launches 4th Young Reporters’ Programme

Summer Games 6 June 2016

LAUSANNE – After the inaugural edition of the FISU Young Reporters’ Programme in 2011 at the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China and the successful editions during the Universiades in Kazan (RUS/2013) and Gwangju (KOR/2015), FISU will host its U-Media programme for the 4th time at the 29th Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei in 2017.

FISU launched this journalism education programme to provide young (sport) journalists with a unique training experience during FISU’s major multi-sport event, the Summer Universiade.

The Young Reporters’ Programme aims to include 21 to 25-year-old students or recent graduates in journalism/communications from the five continents. The FISU Media & Communication Committee chaired by Verena Burk will select 12 candidates from Africa (2), America (4), Asia (2), Oceania (2) and Europe (2) and bring them right into the middle of the action during the period of the Universiade, with full access to the competition venues and MPC. They will be joined by their peers from Chinese Taipei.

Detailed info on how to apply can be found in this document.

Deadline for applications is set on 15 December 2016. Successful candidates will be announced towards the end of February 2017.

Read below what some YRP alumni said about the programme

Fabio de Domenici (RSA): “YRP was an amazing experience for me, and very beneficial in helping me landing my job as a journalist for one of the biggest football publications in South Africa, Kick Off Magazine. The practical experience of working at such a prestigious event as the Universiade, getting the feel of first-hand sports journalism, interviewing athletes in a mixed zone, seeing the processes and proper conduct at the venues and meeting deadlines while working under pressure – these are the very same scenarios I face on a daily basis in my job, something which I feel more than well-prepared for after my experience at Kazan 2013. Needless to say it made a huge impression on my CV for my bosses, who still to this day bring up the fact that I worked as a reporter in Russia.”

Megan McPhaden (CAN): “The FISU Young Reporters Programme is an exceptional opportunity for an aspiring sports journalist. The programme brings together talented journalists from around the globe to cover one of the largest multi-sport events in the world. It’s a once in a life time experience that teaches you skills that you can’t learn in a classroom. In addition to the working experience you make lifelong friendships with your peers. The experience I have gained through the YRP has proved invaluable, especially when it comes to getting a job in the media. The workshops and seminars have given me the skills to succeed in a fast paced multisport event environment. In my experience potential employers have been impressed to see that I have an international experience on my résumé, especially with a global organization like FISU.” The YRP Gwangju 2015 Alumnus works as a Reporter/Anchor at AM980 London News and also writes for Ontario Out of Doors Magazine.
