First Cloud Meeting between Chengdu Mayor, OC and FISU

With the global coronavirus pandemic having thrown up challenges for the entire world, the Organising Committee of the Chengdu 2021 Summer World University Games is no different. To ensure that work continues efficiently, a video conference meeting was set up on 22 April between Chengdu, Beijing and Europe to discuss preparations for the World University Games.

The meeting was attended by Chengdu Mayor Luo Qiang, the Organising Committee, FISU officials led by Secretary General-CEO Eric Saintrond and FUSC (University Sports Federation of China) delegation led by Deputy Chairman Xue Yanqing.

During the meeting it was reported that despite the COVID-19 situation, construction of major venues is ongoing and on track. A video showcasing these constructions was presented to all attending the meeting.

Xue Yanqing said, “The 2021 Chengdu WUG will be a major international multi-sport event to be held in China. The Chinese State Government is also closely involved and concerned due to the scale of the event, soon after the pandemic. And so we have confidence that everything will proceed smoothly.”

On behalf of Chengdu People’s government, mayor Luo Qiang expressed his gratitude for the trust from FISU and FUSC. He said, “Under the current situation of the pandemic, Chengdu has a huge responsibility for hosting the World University Games. Under the strong leadership of the Chinese state government and Sichuan provincial government, Chengdu will resolve all difficulties calmly by deploying effective measures to ensure a successful event.”

The 31st edition of the Summer World University Games will be held in Chengdu in August 2021, with over 10,000 athletes from over 170 countries and regions expected to participate.
