As we get closer to the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games (WUG) next summer, several promotional activities were launched with the theme of ‘Love Chengdu, Embrace the Games’. These WUG themed events were held in various schools, including primary, middle and high school institutions. Here, information and stories about the FISU World University Games were shared with the students, getting them to ‘Feel Chengdu 2021’.
Rongbao (left) joined the Sports Meet of Chengdu No.7 High SchoolChengdu’s school students got to know that the FISU World University Games will be celebrating its 60th edition next year, with 30 Summer Games and 29 Winter Games having taken place until now.
One of the largest multi-sport events in the world, the FISU WUG have already seen the participation of more than 150,000 university athletes, throughout its history.
During the promotional event, a speaker introduced the Games and used sets of data to show how important the FISU WUG are to Chengdu and China. At the same time, the slogan, emblem, mascot, as well as venues of the Games were introduced in detail.
Zhang Shan sharing stories with school children in ChengduThe event invited several sports stars, including Yin Jing, gold medallist of the men’s 110m hurdles at the 25th Universiade in Belgrade, as well as Jiang Wenwen & Jiang Tingting, world champions of synchronized swimming.
Also present was Zhang Shan, world champion of skeet shooting. They all shared their inspiring stories with the children, and motivated them to chase their dreams bravely.
The athlete speakers also encouraged children to learn from sports role models like Yao Ming, Liu Xiang, Guo Jingjing, and the Chinese women’s volleyball team, who began their sports career at the FISU Games and started to shine afterwards.

The Chinese women’s volleyball team was especially emphasised for their spirit. They were winners at the Bucharest 1981 Summer Universiade, and went onto win gold in six editions of the summer Games, including three consecutive ones in 1999, 2001 and 2003.
The children were inspired by their stories and encouragement.
The Executive Committee of the Chengdu 2021 will continue to conduct a series of promotional events ahead of the World University Games, such as ‘WUG Promoters’ recruiting and ‘WUG Class Timetable’, to engage more primary & middle school students in the Games and to display the power of youth at the Chengdu 2021 Games.
