Chengdu 2021 FISU Games Torch Tower lights up

Summer Games 25 November 2021

The flame tower of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games was lit up this week, during a trial phase of the tower’s lighting.

The impressive torch tower – an expanded version of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games torch “Rong Huo” – was built in Dong’an Lake Sports Park, the central area of the FISU World University Games Park.

The 31 meter tall torch tower embodies the spirit of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games. The 12 curves of its main structure symbolise the 12 rays of the sun in Chinese culture. These curves spiralling up the body join at the top to support the ignition device, shaped like the ancient ray focussing burning glass ignition system; “Yangsui”.

The lighting system is designed with many functions that can be adapted to represent events, holidays, and major festivals through the usage of colour. The lighting – which is designed to be energy-saving – will have a specific mode for when the flame is lit during the FISU Games and you will be able to see the flame rise throughout the tower before coming out of the top.

For the tower’s normal lighting mode, light beams will radiate into the sky from a high-altitude projection lamp, illuminating in the open its surroundings. The tower will become a symbolic must-go point for snap-taking at night. After the Games, the flame can be reproduced by a holographic projection technology and will thus remain part of the stunning landscape of the city.

Thanks to its eight ignitions, the gas-fired flame will be able to resist extreme weather conditions such as rain and strong winds up to category 9. The flame’s colour can also be adjusted to create a stunning effect.
