2009 SU Update: Charles Wendon Memorial Race for Officials

Summer Games 12 July 2009

In the Friendship Park, Belgrade at 9h30 on July 11th, the ‘Charles Wendon Memorial Race for Officials’ took place over 3 km. This event, the 19th in the series, was seen following the half marathon on part of the half marathon course.

36 competitors from nine countries took part in the race. In a tight finish, the Australian swimming coach Wayne Thomas narrowly defeated Martin McDonald of New Zealand with Serbian official Ello Janic close behind. The time was a very respectable 9.22. The fastest woman, Jelina Raicavic ran a time of 11:16. Magda Boutmans sacrificed her chance of a fast run by jogging with the race curator Alf Laser to keep him company. Race Director Till Luft, FISU Assistant Technical Chair for Athletics, later commented that this edition was the best since Zagreb (where he won).
