1st World University Sport Climbing Championship opens


SHANGHAI - On 12 October, it is drizzling in Shanghai, however, all the participants in Songjiang campus of Donghua University are in high spirit to attend the opening ceremony of the inaugural World University Sport Climbing Championship.

At 9 am, uplifting beats of drums blares out from the gym of the university, while a splendid dragon dance starts, followed by martial arts performances. Energetic cheerleaders dance passionately on the upbeat music. The opening ceremony is full of vigor. After the wonderful performances, all the people stand up to witness the flag-raising ceremony. And then the host of the Dragon TV introduces the distinguished guests present in the opening ceremony. Jin Haiyan, the deputy party secretary of Donghua University welcomes the competitors from 17 countries. FISU EC member Hisato Igarashi addresses the participants and expresses his sincere thanks to Donghua University and FUSC for all the efforts they have made. FUSC Vice-President Yang Guoli declares the opening of the 1st World University Sport Climbing Championship. The opening ceremony ends with the song ‘I Believe’ performed by China’s fastest climber Zhong Qixin and Shanghai singer Luo Yun.

After the Opening Ceremony of the WUC, the first competitions started: speed climbing. In the men’s competition Stanislav Kokorin (RUS) beats Marcin Dzienski (POL) to the gold while Sungjoon Chae (KOR) is faster than Jan Kriz (CZE) claiming the bronze. In the Women’s competition, Anna Brozek (POL) beats compatriot Klaudia Buczek to the gold while Svetlana Motovilova (RUS) prevent her compatriot Iuliia Kaplina from taking the bronze.
