First Competitions and Opening Ceremony at 1st WUC Ski Orienteering

TULA – The first ever FISU World University Champions in Ski Orienteering were crowned yesterday in Aleksin, Tula, Russian Federation, after concluding the men’s and women’s sprint disciplines. All 55 competitors started their course and successfully completed the map.

The winner in the women’s competition was Sonja MORSKY (10:13,1s) from Finland (University of Eastern Finland). She was followed by Mira KASKINEN (10:18,7s) also from Finland (University of Turku) and Daisy KUDRE from Estonia (University of Tartu) in 10:30,2s.

The men’s competition was won by Stanimir BELOMAZHEV from Bulgaria (National Defence College ‘G.S.Rakovski’) with 10:55,4s. Yury YAZYKOU from Belarus (Smolensk State Academy of Physical Education, Sports and Tourism Institute) was second with 11:00,9s and Tuomas KOTRO from Finland (Saimaa University of Applied Sciences) was third in 11:18, together with Jakub SKODA (Czech Republic).

 

Opening Ceremony

 

The FISU World University Ski Orienteering Championship had its Opening Ceremony at the OKA Complex where all participants are accommodated. Many local spectators joined the ceremony that was presided by FISU President Oleg MATYTSIN. President Matytsin thanked the local authorities, namely in the person of the Governor of Tula Region Mr Aleksey DYUMIN. Other VIP attendants included the Deputy Chair of the Tula Region Ms Marina LEVINA, the Member of the Federation Council of Tula Region Ms Julia VEPRENTSEVA, the Minister of Sport and Youth Policy Mr Dmitriy JAKOVLEV, the Rector of Tula State University Mikhail GRYAZEV, the Vice President of National Orienteering Federation Yuri JANIN, amongst others.

The ceremony saw all countries participate in the traditional march pass and was accompanied by performances from the Tula State University Students’ choir. The opportunity was used also to present the medals to the student-athletes from the morning competition session – the men’s and women’s sprint.

Today the competition proceeds with the men’s and women’s pursuit.
