20th WUC Orienteering 2016 – Swedish glory on the middle distance

MISKOLC - This Wednesday, 113 men and 88 women were competing in Javorkut, 25km from downtown Miskolc, for the middle distance races.

As planned, if Great Britain clearly dominated the sprint, Scandinavia and Sweden in particular remained the rulers of the forest in both gender.

The men’s race consisted of a 5.6km course with no less than 205m of vertical climb and 23 controls. On this hilly terrain, Oskar Sjöberg (SWE) managed to save the short gap he had created on his closest follower until the end, offering a new gold medal to his country. Behind him, Pavel Kubat (CZE) ends taking the silver medal 12 seconds behind Sjöberg and 35 seconds ahead of Johan Runesson (SWE) taking the bronze, the second bronze medal for him after the one won on the long distance. Sweden placed four athletes within the top 6 and demonstrated once again that they will be the clear favorite of the men’s relay tomorrow.

The women’s race was here again an exciting competition with Lilian Forsgren (SWE) beating Andrine Benjaminsen (NOR) for 6 seconds on the 4.4km course. The already multiple medallist at the World University Championships in Olomuc (CZE – 2014) and Alicante (ESP – 2012) took her chance thanks to good route choices and the injury of Benjaminsen in the last part of the race. Denisa Kosova (CZE) already World University Champion of the sprint and silver medallist on the mixed team sprint relay completed her collection with a bronze medal.

Thursday will be the final day of this World University Orienteering Championship 2016 with the men’s and women’s relay which will take place in Javorkut once again before the Closing Ceremony scheduled at 14:30.
