2013 SU Update: FISU Medical Chair assured by Russian Authorities of High Standard Medical Care

MOSCOW - Dr. Larry Rink, Chair of the FISU Medical Committee, met in Moscow with Veronika Skvortsova, Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Russia, and Airat Farrakhov, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Director of Sports Medicine for the Republic of Russia.

FISU was assured of the full support for the medical care of the 13,000 student-athletes and support personnel for the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade (World University Games). The Republic of Tatarstan with the Local Organizing Committee has developed a large Polyclinic in the Athletes’ Village and expect about 10,000 patient visits during this the time the Village is open. One new Emergency Medicine Hospital has been built in Kazan as well and four other hospitals have undergone significant structural improvements in preparation for the Games.

Other Medical Legacy Programs from the World University Games for the city of Kazan and the Republic of Russia include a large educational center, a new athlete injury surveillance program and development of methods of evaluating athletic heart in a cost-effective manner in an effort to prevent sudden death in athletes. All athletes will have the opportunity to have a cardiac evaluation including electrocardiogram and echocardiogram. This will be the largest mass screening of student-athletes ever.
