2nd WUC Speed Skating – Final Day of Competitions

ALMATY – Mirco Giacomo Nenzi crowned his trip to Almaty (KAZ) with two medals: gold for 500m and bronze for mass start race on the fourth day of 2nd World University Speed Skating Championship. For the Italian athlete these were already the third and the fourth wins during this competition.  “I’m satisfied with my results during competition and I’m happy about my medals. Medeu is a very beautiful place and as it was found world-famous arena become successful for me”, Nenzi said.

With his second place, Artur Nogal (POL) came 19 ms behind the winner clocking a 70.74. The Polish athlete was in the lead after his final round, but being 21 ms behind Nenzi during first round cost him a golden medal. The third place went to Ching-Yang Sung (TPE), for whom this was the first podium result in the 2014 WUC.

Mariya Sizova took a home win in 500m ladies race finishing again on the third place in front of her home crowd. With a very good performance in both rounds the Russian Irina Arshinova finished on the second place clocking totally 78,82. One man’s sorrow is the other man’s joy: Yuliya Kozyreva Russian team member proved his good shape achieving the best result today in 500m.

The most spectacular mass start race brought another success for Russian team. Alexander Razorenov and Olesya Chernega showed the best results in men and ladies starts. Alessio Trentini (ITA) and Marina Zueva (BLR) were ahead of Mirco Nenzi (ITA) and Aleksandra Goss (POL) occupying silver and bronze podiums in men and ladies races.

The last day of 2014 World University Speed Skating Championship was concluded with the medal and closing ceremonies followed by speech from the Deputy Mayor of the city of Almaty, Mrs. Zaure Zhumanaliyeva who stressed the high level of competition organization and thanked all Almaty guests for taking part in competition and visiting Almaty.

Summing up four days of the 2nd World University Speed Skating Championship it should be mentioned, that legendary “Medeu” ice arena confirmed its “records factory” name. During the days five track records were established: three in the men’s races, in ladies 1000m and team pursuit. Special note should be given to the Polish team members, who gained 8 golden, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.
