High calibre bids for Championships in 2022 and 2024

LAUSANNE – More than 40 bids, from 25 countries hoping to host 25 events that will take place in 2022 and 2024; this summarises the FISU World University Championship evaluation week that just concluded at the FISU Headquarters on Friday.

The FISU evaluation team, comprising the Chair and Vice-Chair of the International Technical Committee Marian Dymalski and Fernando Parente, as well as the FISU Sports department staff, was suitably satisfied with the calibre of the bids presented through the week.

“The high technical conditions presented by many of the bidding committees were impressive,” said Fernando Parente. “They give us a guarantee about the world-class delivery and quality that we can expect from these events in 2022 and 2024.”

“The World University Championships are FISU’s most important platform for innovation, growth and inclusion of newer sports,” he added. “The standard of these bids allows us to be confident about the continued development of our sports programme.”

A WUC bid evaluation in progress“The assessment of the evaluation team will be submitted to the FISU Executive Committee for attribution to take place, in early December 2019,” says Julien Carrel, FISU World University Championships Manager. “What has been really exciting is the geographical range we had this time, with some new countries bidding and also some old allies coming back into the fold.”

The bidding committees included representatives of cities from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. South America was represented by bids from Argentina, Brazil and first-timer Costa Rica while North America came in with a strong bid from Lake Placid. Lake Placid, situated in the state of New York is slated to host the Winter Universiade in 2023, and is looking to host two Championships as test events ahead of the multi-sport mega event.

There was strong interest from Asian countries for Shooting Sport as well.
