The first day of the 2020 FISU eSports Challenge Football, the first international eSports competition for university students, brought with it many goals and a few dominant results. The group stages in both, the men’s and women’s draw got underway with many matches ending with scores like 7-0 and 8-2.
During the first session that was live streamed on four platforms, Al Marzooqi from the Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai, opened the competition with two goals against Goulart, from the University of Porto, Portugal. In other men’s group matches that followed, Al Hebsi from Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, UAE, lost to Mohafezatkar from Islamic Azad University of Qazvi, Iran, by a 7-0 score. Mohafezatkar had some great offensive plays from the likes of Neymar, Cruyff, Saint-Maximan and Mbappe.
The third match of the day, between Diego Guerra from University of the Republic, Uruguay and Shchedrin from the Russian University of Economics was a really intense match, even though the score ended 8-2 in favour of Guerra.
The fourth match of the morning session saw the Egyptian player Mahmoud of October 6 University thrash Raj from SRM University, India, by 7 goals to none. Mahmoud used a lot of players from the Premier League; such as Lucas Moura, Aubameyang and Heung-min Son to accelerate the game and make a really good set of plays around the box. The result showed a glimpse of this player’s skill and hinted at how far he can get in the competition.
The second set of the day’s featured matches included women’s games. The first, between Najd from Al-Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University Riyadh and and Jessica Au, from Monash University, Australia, ended 5-1 in favour of Najd. The second match put together Vari from Edutus College, Hungary and Mahmoud from October 6 University, Egypt. It was a closely contested game, with many chances for both sides, but Vari came through with the win with a 4-2 score.
The runner-up of the recently concluded FISU America eSports tournament, Brazil’s Ulisses Selles from Anhembi Morumbi University took on Ukrainian Polishchuk from the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine. Selles set the pace, as he always does, and started strong. The game ended 10-1 in favour of the Brazillian, the biggest margin of victory of the first day of the tournament.

The objective of this first ever FISU eSports Challenge is to gauge the interest in eSports among university students during this time of COVID-19 and to encourage sport and competition, despite social distancing. The challenge also provides a platform for university students to have fun and make connections across the world.
