Championships 6 July 2018

The 9th edition of the FISU World University Beach Volleyball Championship is headed next week to the iconic Munich Olympic Park

The world’s best collegiate Beach Volleyball players are coming together in the German metropolis of Munich from 9-13 July 2018, for the FISU World University Beach Volleyball Championship. 32 women’s and men’s teams from 29 different countries will compete at the Olympic Park, home to the 1972 Olympic Games.

A total of 128 stars-in-the-making will compete over five days to establish world supremacy in university Beach Volleyball and perhaps set the tone for international competition in the years to come. The four American teams in action will once again be counted among the favourites for the title, having won the women’s event during the last edition of the Championships in Pärnu, Estonia in 2016.

For the host nation, twins Bennet and David Poniewaz make up one of the two men’s teams that are hopeful of a successful tournament. “I participated in the last two tournaments in Porto and Pärnu, both superb events,” says David Poniewaz. “However, playing for Germany and for my own fans in Munich is the best.”

The Olympic Park in Munich is celebrated for its sustainability and continues to be a world class venue for national and international sporting events and concerts, decades after the 1972 Games.

FISU President Oleg Matytsin believes the opportunity to compete at an Olympic venue will be a golden one for the athletes. “It is a wonderful opportunity for the student athletes to compete at this iconic Olympic venue,” he says. “We at FISU believe in providing such unique opportunities for students, so that they are exposed, educated and influenced in a positive way to be fitting leaders of tomorrow.”

It indeed will be a unique experience for the competitors, visitors and guests from around the world as there will be many cultural activities and programmes including concerts, readings and exhibitions by renowned artists.

The main attraction, however, will be on the sand courts under the summer sun. Beach volleyball is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and entertaining sports and it has been part of the FISU World University Championships since 2002. The 9th edition is almost upon us. So get set for sun, sand and some scintillating sporting action. You can follow all the action from 9 July onwards, here.
