After 3 days of competition the 6th World University Rugby Seven Championship in São José dos Campos, Brazil came to an end. Canada (W) and Great Britain (M) were crowned champions of this year’s edition. The Canadians won for the third time the women’s tournament and the British team won its second title. Brazil, the host country, got for the first time in its history the bronze medal with the women’s team. The Brazilian men ended fourth.

The finals started with Canada and France fighting for the gold. Both teams were in the top 3 of favourite teams in the women’s competition. In the groups phase, Canada and France met first and the French girls had a victory with a score of 19 x 12, but during the gold medal game the Canadians overpowered the French team winning the final with 26-17.

In the men’s tournament, Great Britain and Belgium played one of the best matches of the Championship as expected. The men’s final was marked by excellent attacks and defence of both sides. In the end, the British rugby men showed their tradition in the sport and beat the Belgians with a tight score, 17-7. France finished in third place after beating Brazil 19-7, in the bronze medal match.

The Closing and Awarding Ceremony happened right after the finals at the Stadium Martins Pereira. Besides the medals and trophies, the WUC also awarded best female player to Larrance from France, best male player to Aaron Myers from GBR while the Fair Play award went to the women’s team of Morocco.
