France dominates university orienteering

Happiness and pride at its best for the French university orienteering team.

Thanks to Cécile Calandry, Guilhem Verove, Antoine Becaert and the overall strength of their team, the “Tricolores” claimed four out of the six gold medals in Portugal during a hot and thrilling FISU World University Championship.

Throughout the four days of competition in the streets and forests of Vila Real, France and Finland battled in every race to be the best university orienteering nation. In the end, France came out first with four gold medals, one silver and four bronze, while Sweden can be extremely proud of its gold medal and three silver.

Overall Europe didn’t leave any gaps on the podiums, with Italy, Hungary, Norway, Finland and Switzerland winning all the other medals.

The event was marked by great sportsmanship, constant heat and a high level visit with Portugal’s Secretary of State for Sport  Pedro Dias, who visited the FISU World University Orienteering Championship on 31 July, reaffirming the Portuguese Government’s commitment to university sport and its continued support for the organisation of major international sporting events in Portugal.

The Vila Real 2026 FISU World University Championship Orienteering is now officially over. We could like to congratulate all the student-athletes and coaches and thank the referees, volunteers, partners, and supporters for their enthusiasm and hard work.
