The best orienteering student-athletes from 29 countries and regions have travelled to northern Portugal to compete in the 23rd FISU World University Championship of this sport.
Vila Real is about to proudly host the FISU World University Championship Orienteering, welcoming student-athletes from around the globe to compete in one of the world’s most challenging and rewarding sports. The city’s diverse terrain — from forest trails to urban routes and steep mountain slopes — provides an exceptional natural arena that will test the athletes’ precision, endurance, and strategy. The event will also highlight Vila Real’s strong commitment to promoting sustainable tourism and active lifestyles.
The FISU World University Championship Orienteering will take place from 28 July to 1 August.

The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), located in Vila Real, is one of Portugal’s leading institutions in environmental, agricultural, and life sciences, as well as in technology, education, and sports.
Founded in 1986, UTAD is a dynamic and innovative university with a strong connection to the surrounding region and its natural landscapes.
Its eco-friendly campus, often described as a “green university city,” provides the ideal setting for research, learning, and sport.
The competition areas
The competition areas are located in the surroundings of Vila Real at altitudes typically ranging between 500 and 900 meters above sea level.
Urbain terrain – Sprint competitions
The Sprint competitions course passes through the historic center, with tight streets and irregular blocks, and by residential areas, which combine open courtyards, small green spaces, and passages between buildings.
The high density of route options and frequent changes of direction require quick decision-making and precision in choosing the route (characteristics typical of the university campus orienteering style).
Forrest terrain – Middle Distance competitions
The forest terrain is technically challenging and varied, located in a military training area in Vila Real. Athletes will cross a diverse landscape, with dense pine forests, scattered chestnut and oak trees, and moderate to steep slopes.
The runnability varies along the course, alternating between open, fast areas and technical sections that require precision and strategy. This diversity offers a unique orienteering experience, combining speed, decision-making, and technique.
The participants
Almost 250 participants from 29 countries and regions and four continents will be discovering the city and its surroundings at a high pace.
