The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) just after the opening of the European Universities Games in Salerno (Italy), reaffirming their shared vision and collaboration.
International university sport cooperation was further strengthened on 19 July 2026, in Salerno, where the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to promoting and developing university sports activities globally and continentally, fostering closer collaboration, knowledge exchange, and new opportunities for student-athletes, institutions, and sports professionals.
The MoU was signed by representatives of both organisations. On behalf of FISU, present were President Leonz Eder and Secretary General & CEO Matthias Remund. On EUSA’s side, the agreement was signed by President Haris Pavletic and Secretary General/CEO Matjaz Pecovnik. The signing underscored the strategic importance of the partnership and confirmed a shared vision for the future of university sport.
The MoU establishes a non-binding framework through which both organisations agree to cooperate to advance the university sports movement. The MoU specifically intends to accompany the implementation of the FISU Global Strategy 2027, serving as an expression of mutual desire to work together to further the aims of both federations in the true spirit of the university sports movement.
“Since EUSA was founded, our two organisations have worked closely together. The fact that the EUSA Secretary General is named Matjaž and the FISU Secretary General is named Matthias is already a guarantee of good cooperation!” smiled FISU President Leonz Eder. “This Memorandum of Understanding reflects our shared commitment today, and I am confident that, if EUSA accepts our new strategy, we will soon be signing an even stronger Memorandum of Understanding.”
The cooperation will focus on the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices in sports management and development, as well as the organisation of bilateral and multilateral sports competitions and events. It also includes the development of joint university sports programmes, workshops, and seminars for National University Sports Federations (NUSFs), university representatives, and student-athletes.
The collaboration will enhance coordination between National, Continental, and International institutions while promoting a high-level dialogue between FISU, EUSA, and NUSFs. Both organisations will contribute to activities on the occasion of the International Day of University Sport, the development of the FISU Healthy Campus programme, and the growth of the sports volunteering movement.
Through this agreement, EUSA and FISU will strengthen their cooperation to support the development of university sport through shared expertise, strategic collaboration, and joint initiatives. The partnership will enhance coordination between the two organisations, promote the university sports movement internationally, and create new opportunities for students, member organisations, and the wider university sports community.
