A new Collaboration Convention to advance volleyball in university sports

22 November 2024
FIVB President Fabio Azevedo and FISU President Leonz Eder signed the Convention at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne.

The FISU and FIVB convention will commence on 1 January 2025 for four years and builds on an already successful history between the organisations.

The global sporting community celebrates a significant milestone today as the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) signed the Volleyball Collaboration Convention, extending the success of their long-standing collaboration in beach volleyball to indoor volleyball.

This Volleyball Collaboration Convention extends the long-standing collaboration between the two entities.

The Volleyball Collaboration Convention promises to facilitate programmes that promote the knowledge and practice of volleyball in universities, as well as the promotion of FISU activities with FIVB’s National Federations. Moreover, the agreement also sets the stage for new opportunities in training, competitions and talent development for student athletes.

Volleyball part of FISU’s history since 1959

Volleyball holds a special place in FISU’s history, having been an integral part of the FISU World University Games Summer programme since its inception in 1959. The newly signed convention, which will commence on 1 January 2025 for four years, underscores a commitment to furthering the growth and development of beach and indoor volleyball across the university sports landscape worldwide.

The official signing ceremony took place at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland with both FIVB President Fabio Azevedo and FISU President Leonz Eder putting pen to paper for this key collaboration.

“We are thrilled to be extending our collaboration with FISU,” commented Fabio Azevedo. “Having had such a successful beach volleyball partnership for a number of years, it seemed only natural to partner through volleyball too. Student athletes are a key part of the Global Volleyball Movement, and we are excited to create even more opportunities for them to be part of our sport!”

FISU President Leonz Eder echoed these views, stating: “Our beach volleyball partnership with the FIVB has been extremely valued and we are proud and honoured to be collaborating once again with the organisation. Providing opportunities for student athletes is at the very heart of what FISU does, and we are looking forward to enhancing this through volleyball, both on and off the court.”
