In 2016, FISU with the support of UNESCO claimed the 20 September as IDUS, the International Day of University Sport. Since then, students and all other actors of the university sport have been celebrating this special day all over the planet.
The 20 September was chosen eight years ago, because it is the date of the opening of the very first Student World Championships in 1924. For eight years now, the internationally-recognised day highlights the importance of linking universities and their local communities together through sport, physical activity and healthy living.
And this year, there is an additional reason for a celebration, as it is also the 75th anniversary of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Find out more about its history here.
“It is an opportunity to try new sports, to engage in local or traditional customs and recognise that sports play an important role in our lives,” said FISU President Leonz Eder, who actually celebrates university sport every other day of the year too!
If the date had skipped your mind, it is not too late to join the celebrations. You can find tips, logos and other resources here. And take a look at what people did last year.
The 20 September 2024 will also be a huge day for the next Torino 2025 FISU World University Games, as it will mark the beginning of the Torch Relay. So don’t miss any of their publications either.
Come on, join the global movement and show your passion for university sports by actively celebrating and promoting IDUS around you!
