Helsinki hosted glorious centennial celebration of Finnish Student Sports Federation

The vibrant city of Helsinki witnessed a historic event in the middle of April, as luminaries from the world of university sports gathered to celebrate the remarkable 100th anniversary of the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL). The gala affair, held in honor of a century of athletic excellence and camaraderie, brought together distinguished guests from across Finland and beyond.

Among the esteemed attendees were the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Physical Activity of Finland, who seized the moment to pay homage to key figures associated with Finland’s university sports movement. Also present were representatives from Student Associations affiliated with OLL, former Presidents of OLL, and esteemed delegates from the Finnish Olympic Committee. Adding to the international flair were the Presidents of the National University Sports Federations of Norway and Sweden, as well as figures from the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

The event pulsated with energy and joy as guests celebrated a century of dedication, passion, and sportsmanship. The atmosphere was electric with jubilation and camaraderie, reflecting the vibrant spirit of Finnish university sports. Friends of Finnish University Sports and International University Sports united in celebration, sharing stories, experiences, and aspirations for the future.

Official speeches resonated with gratitude and pride, delivered by notable figures including Sandra Bergqvist, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Physical Activity of Finland, Mio Kortelainen, President of OLL, Adam Roczek, President of EUSA, and Fernando Parente, representing FISU.

Parente, speaking on behalf of FISU President Leonz Eder, conveyed heartfelt congratulations to OLL, lauding its commitment to promoting and advancing university sports globally. FISU highlighted OLL’s significant contributions, including hosting the Winter Universiade in 1970 and organizing various university world championships. Parente praised OLL’s ethos of fostering student well-being and educational experiences through physical activity.

In a poignant moment, a silver plate was bestowed upon OLL, symbolizing a century of excellence and dedication to university sports.

OLL’s 100th anniversary gala on 13 of April was well attended with around 200 people present.

The celebration not only honored the illustrious past of OLL but also heralded a promising future, guided by the enduring spirit of university sports. As the evening concluded, attendees departed with renewed enthusiasm, inspired by a century of achievements and eager to embark on the next chapter of Finnish Student Sports Federation’s journey.
