University of Alabama Huntsville becomes first in North America to achieve Healthy Campus Certification

In a historic milestone, the University of Alabama Huntsville has earned the coveted Gold Certification from the FISU Healthy Campus Program, making it the first university in North America to achieve this prestigious recognition.

The Gold Certification signifies the University of Alabama Huntsville’s commitment to excellence across seven core domains of the Healthy Campus Programme, which include: Physical activity and sport, Nutrition, Disease prevention, Mental and social health, Risk behavior, Environment, sustainability & social responsibility, and Healthy Campus Management.

Charles L. Karr, President of the University of Alabama Huntsville expressed his pride in the university’s accomplishment and credited the dedicated efforts of Dr. Noemi Zaharia, who played a pivotal role in coordinating the campus-wide initiative. Dr. Zaharia, a distinguished figure in sports, notably won five gold medals in swimming at the 1987 Summer Universiade in Zagreb and secured two individual medley medals at the 1988 Olympics.

President Karr (picture below) emphasized the university’s dedication to promoting healthy lifestyles and providing an inclusive environment for all individuals interested in physical activity. The university boasts a comprehensive sports programme designed to cater to a wide range of motivations for participation, ensuring that everyone can find an avenue to pursue their fitness goals.
