Chinese Taipei sweep medals on last day

KUALA LUMPUR – Six gold medals were decided on the last day of the World University Badminton Championship in Malaysia, making it a befitting finaleto the week-long premier event.   


The climax round included the finals of Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles in the Individual Category and also one gold medal for the title of ‘Overall Champion’.

Pengbo Ren from China was the first to claim gold in the Men’s Singles as he defeated Chun-Yi Lin from Chinese Taipei 21-18, 21-12. The bronze medal in this category went to the two losing finalists, Guipu Lin from China and Satheishtharan Ramachandran from Malaysia.


Malaysia was back in action in the Men’s Doubles, as the pair of Nur Mohammad Azriyn Ayub and Juan Shen LOW defeated Hwitae Kim and Jaehwan Kim from Republic of Korea with a score of 21-7 and 21-18.


It was one of the liveliest matches of the day at the Stadium Juara, with the stands filled to capacity with Malaysian supporters. Bronze in Men’s Doubles went to Kaixiang Huang and Xiangyu Ren from China as well as Li-Wei Po and Ming-Tse Yang from Chinese Taipei.


In Women’s Singles, Yi-Ting Hung from Chinese Taipei claimed the third gold medal of the day, when she beat Korea’s Dahui Lee 21-11 and 21-15. Bronze was won by Singapore’s Grace Hui Zhen and Hyunji Jung from Korea.


Both, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles were a clean sweep for Chinese Taipei, as the finals in these two categories were contested between teams from the same country. This meant that gold and silver in these two events went to Chinese Taipei.

While it was an excellent tournament for Chinese Taipei, teams from China, Korea, Singapore and host nation Malaysia would be happy with their performance as they were all among the medals on the last day.
