LAUSANNE – FISU announces a partnership with EPIC to develop and implement an innovative multi-sport event planning model for the 30th Summer Universiade in Naples 2019.

FISU’s 30th Summer Universiade will be hosted in Naples, Italy in July 2019. This 30th edition will mark a special anniversary – 60 years of the Universiade and 70 years of FISU. Indeed, FISU will return to the country where the 1st Summer Universiade was organized in 1959, more precisely in the city of Torino. In many aspects Italy has played a special and decisive role in the successful development of FISU and Naples will be the right timing and the ideal place to celebrate this very special milestone.
Due to limited preparation time – 34 months instead of 60 – FISU has signed a contract with the US based strategic event planning company EPIC on Saturday 10 September to help ensure adequate support for the organizers to develop and implement an innovative event planning model.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to support FISU and Naples 2019 SU organizers and to put into action what we believe is a more efficient and cost-sensitive operational planning paradigm conceived after working with 23 OCs and OCOGs over more than 30 years in the event industry”, EPIC President Alan Shaw commented.
In alignment with the principles of the IOC’s Agenda 2020, in particular to reduce cost and complexity of major sporting events, the model simplifies and streamlines planning and minimizes the steep learning curve experienced by most organizers. Centred around a ‘core team’ of individuals with relevant experience who develop 20 critical ‘foundation components’ far earlier in the Games lifecycle than is typical, the model steers away from creating the standard hierarchical, reactive organizing committee that struggles with integration by activating a more concentric, proactive model that integrates planning from the outset.
FISU and EPIC representatives kicked-off the initial planning phase with the 2019 SU Organising Committee during a recently held 3-day workshop in Naples.
