KAZAN In the world of sport events, Russia is undeniable one of the main actors. The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, the 2015 FINA Worlds and the 2018 FIFA World Cup will come to everyone’s mind. But there is more. A lot more… Russia is one of the countries who have the lead in university sport. The Summer Universiade in Kazan is proof of that.

In regard to the games, there was a press conference with a strong message. Russia and more particular Kazan have a clear vision about university sport and what it should be like. Topics like economy, sustainable development and education are never far away. Investments had to be made, but more than ever it looks like they were made with insight and the needs of local people in mind.

Another theme where Russia has the leading role is health. The `Check up Your Heart Project’ is a great example of that. Main purpose of this program is prevention. To avoid things like ‘sudden death’ in athletes is extremely important. Besides that, the program also identifies the need for knowledge. According to Dr Lawrence Rink, chair of the FISU Medical Committee, this cardiology project will make sure that the games are safer in the future than ever and will therefore be the greatest legacy for this games.

This long-term thinking characterizes the way of thought of the Russian people. In every single way it’s obvious that Russia has a crystal clear vision about this.

With the amazing opening ceremony as the kick-off for the games on July 6th at the Kazan Arena Stadium, more than 10,000 athletes, 20,000 volunteers and over 3,500 officials will give the best they can. More than 100,000 visitors are expected in Kazan and the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan is totally ready to make the following two weeks unforgettable.
