
BLUMENAU – The city of Blumenau is ready to receive for the first time the World University Handball Championship, from June 21 to July 01, 2012. Teams from Turkey, Czech Republic, Korea, Nigeria, Poland, Algeria, France, Romania, Chile, USA and Kuwait have already confirmed entry in the WUC and promise to fight for the title with the Brazilian teams.
Passionate about handball, the city of Blumenau wants to show to the visitors the strength and tradition of the sport in the region. Considering the main teams and teams from schools, Blumenau currently has about 40 teams and approximately 600 athletes of handball.
“Blumenauis now a national reference in handball, because of the groundwork developed in the city since 1994 and the support of public and private companies to support the teams and athletes. Since 1995, Blumenau delivers players for all categories of the Brazilian Teams of Handball. Recently two athletes, Thayanne Lopes and Elaine Barbosa, participated in the training of the Brazilian Junior National Team and Elaine won the Pan-American Junior title last March, in the Dominican Republic. Therefore, hosting the World University Championship has a special meaning to Blumenau. The city will be able to show its tradition in handball and the physical infrastructure recognized as one of the best in the country”, said city mayor João Paulo Kleinubing.
The president of the Municipal Sports Foundation, Sergio Galdino, told about the European influence in Blumenau. “Blumenauwas founded and settled by Germans. The influence of German culture is still very strong in our society, simply note that the largest beer festival in the Americas (Oktoberfest) is held here every year in October. We live, however, inBrazil. A country of great cultural diversity, especially for receiving immigrants from all parts of the world. The culture of Blumenau is very rich and diverse. In addition, we have an extensive hotel network, internationally recognized cuisine, historic, cultural, natural and tourist attractions. The structure of sports venues offered to the participants is also recognized internationally. With several facilities Blumenau is already selected for acclimation training for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games of Rio 2016”, completed Sergio Galdino.
The participating teams of the 2012 World University Handball Championship will arrive in Blumenau via the Navegantes airport, in Santa Catarina state, and four hotels in the city were appointed by the local organizing committee to lodge the athletes: Hotel Plaza Blumenau, Himmelblau Palace Hotel, SESC Blumenau Hotel and Vienna Park Hotel.
