
KAMPALA – The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) started its General Assembly yesterday, August 20th at the Speke Resort in Munyonyo on the outskirts of Kampala, capitol of Uganda. This meeting gathered over 40 delegates from a total of 18 FASU member countries and a number of invited guests from FISU and other continental member associations.
The FASU members present where: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Invited guests included FISU Vice-Presidents Stefan Bergh and Luciano Cabral, EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri, FISU Executive Committee members Leonz Eder, Marian Dymalski, Sinisa Jasnic, Stravous Douvis and Tai-Cheng Chen, and FISU CEO/General Secretary Eric Saintrond and Executive Assistant Paulo Ferreira, attending the 3rd WUC Woodball that will take place following the FASU GA.
Many more FISU Committee members are present in the Ugandan capital, representing FASU, Hassan Chikh (FISU Vice-President and FASU President), Malumbete Ralethe (FISU 1st Assessor and FASU 1st Vice President), Silvanus Lamptey (FISU Continental delegate and FASU 2nd Vice-President) and Peninnah Kabenge (FISU Assessor and FASU Internal auditor). Also representing African countries present, CIC members Carlos Rosa Lopes and Meziane Hasnaoui, CRS member Dele Akpata, and CESU members Leopold Senghor and Germaine Zambo.
The opening session was made up by welcoming speeches from various parties present. FASU President Hassan Chikh welcomed all delegates to the General Assembly, underlining the good collaboration with FISU and thanking the Ugandan University Sports Federation and national authorities for providing a warm and very African welcome, and for providing great conditions for the development of university sports. The local Organising Committee representative Peninnah Kabenge welcomed everyone to the Pearl of Africa, mentioning that this GA would decide the future of FASU for the years to come.
On behalf of FISU and before proceeding with the sessions’ work, FISU Vice-President Stefan Bergh took the floor, underlining the strategic approach of FISU towards this development through the implementation of the Continental Associate members, seeking to better identify and closer discuss the problems in the specific continents. He mentioned the huge development potential of university sports in Africa, stating FISU’s dedication to further this development.
