The University Taekwondo movement under the International University Sports Federation (FISU) has grown dramatically in the past 22 years. It has seen 10 World University Taekwondo Championships and Taekwondo featured as an optional sport on 3 Summer Universiades (2003 in Daegu, Korea; 2005 in Izmir, Turkey, and 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand) and it wil be an optional sport as well at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia.
Moreover, FISU has been promoting continental developments, including in the Pan Am region; the Organización Deportiva Universitaria Panamericana (ODUPA) was formed in 2007. The 1st Pan-Am University Taekwondo Championship is the first event hosted by ODUPA, together with the University of California Martial Arts Program (UCMAP) from May 27th to 29th, 2009.
