Munich organisers prepare for epic 2018 WUC Beach Volleyball

MUNICH – With just six months to go until the 2018 FISU World University Beach Volleyball Championship comes to the capital city of Germany’s Bavarian state, organisers met to finalise the competition management plans and to develop the cultural programme that will accompany the event.

FISU Senior Executive Committee member Dr. Verena Burk led the WUC Beach Volleyball meetings. A prominent player in the international University Sport Movement, Mrs. Burk is the president of the 2018 WUC Beach Volleyball event that will take place in her home country.

The World University Beach Volleyball Championship organising team meets for preparations for the 2018 event which will take place in the historic Munich Olympic Parc this July.

Last week’s meeting were at the Technical University of Munich campus, and saw organisers present on the current status of the areas of competition, logistics, marketing, protocol and finances. A key point of the meeting was when competition director Roland Höfer presented the preliminary competition schedule.

The tournament in Munich will get underway on Monday, 9 July with group matches. The finals are set for Friday, July 13 with the ladies holding court at 15:00 local time and the men competing one hour later in what should be world-class sports program for spectators and student-athletes alike. The detailed planning will be published soon here

The 2018 WUC Beach Volleyball meeting was led by Dr. Verena Burk, FISU Senior Executive Committee Member and president of the event's organising committee

"We are pleased about the outstanding number of registrations and look forward to some high-quality games,” Mrs. Burk said. “The World University Championship Beach Volleyball will be completed by various cultural programs. It is important to give the athletes and guests from all over the world the opportunity to get to know Munich, a "cosmopolitan city with a heart,” and to promote intercultural communication."

In 2016, the USA Team duo of Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes teamed up for the title. “To bring this gold medal home for USA, we couldn’t be happier,” Ms. Claes said. Poland's Michal Bryl and Kacper Kujawiak won the 2016 men's title.

“We have a couple other exciting plans for players and fans when they’re in Munich for the World University Championship event,” Mrs. Burk added, “but more will be revealed at a later time. Stay tuned.”

Showing the intense interest the event garnered, the 2016 competition was live streamed and broadcasted nationally. The 2018 WUC Beach Volleyball organisers also have plans to bring this year's competition to a global audience.
