Young Reporters Programme alumni highlight value of the programme

FISU 17 November 2020

YRPThe curriculum for the Young Reporters Programme at Chengdu 2021 is coming together, as FISU works closely with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring sports journalists.

The FISU-AIPS Young Reporters Programme will be conducted from 15-30 August 2021, during the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games.

The highly specialized programme includes hands-on training and reporting on the Games, as well as classroom style lectures from stalwarts of the sports and media industry.

The 20 international candidates that will be selected will be joined by 20 young journalists from the host nation, People’s Republic of China. They will have full access to the competition venues and the Main Press Centre, functioning as working journalists.

The 16-day programme will be conducted in English and will begin with an introduction to FISU and the World University Games, as well as to the host city and nation. The first assignment will be coverage of the opening ceremony. Through all competition days, the Young Reporters will be expected to file multi-media news and feature stories, many of which will be published on FISU’s official platforms and channels.

Lucie Hrdličková, YRP 2015“The FISU Young Reporters programme was as beneficial as years of studying journalism at university,” says Lucie Hrdlickova from Czech Republic, who was part of the programme at Gwangju 2015. She is currently a news anchor and reporter at CNN Prima News.

“As a non-native English speaker, it’s where I first started doing interviews in English. What was hard and difficult at first since opened up career opportunities – including covering the last five Games!”

Lucie is a regular at FISU World University Games now, joining the FISU Media team for video reportage and creation of social media content.

Fabio Di Dominicis from South Africa is another YRP alumnus who has remained entrenched in the world of university sports.

Now working as Communication Officer at the European University Sports Association (EUSA), Fabio says, “Being part of the FISU Young Reporters Programme was an eye-opener for me.”

“The practical experience I gained while reporting, working among the best in the business at the highest level of university sport gave me all the tools, confidence and knowledge to put me in good stead for my career in media.”

Fabio De Dominicis, YRP 2013Applications for the programme are currently open, and will close on 31 January 2021. All information about the application procedure can be found here.

During FISU’s selection process, preference will be given to student journalists who are still at university, enrolled in either bachelors or masters programmes. Candidates should have completed at least one year of university studies, and should be between 19-25 years of age.

The inaugural edition of one of FISU’s marquee educational programmes was held in 2011 at the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, People’s Republic of China. This will be the sixth edition of this programme.
