KUORTANE – The small municipality of Kuortane located in the Western part of Finland will host the tenth World University Wrestling Championships in October 2012. Kuortane, a lakeside village with beautiful scenery, is famous for its sports resort which provides excellent facilities for the practice of almost any sport.

Kuortane Sports Institute is one of the main organizers of the championship together with the Finnish Wrestling Federation and Finnish Student Sports Federation. The local organization and facilities were tested already in 2008 when thethird World University Floorball Championships took place in Kuortane and nearby city of Seinäjoki. The experience was highly appreciated by the participants of the tournament, which encouraged the Kuortane Sports Institute and Finnish Student Sports Federation for a new bid.

The Organizing Committee of the 2012 WUC Wrestling had its latest meeting in Kuortane in the end of September. Ms. Maarit Laitinen, secretary general of the event, is convinced that the wrestling championships will be a success:“We have everything ready for the championship here. Accommodation, catering and sports facilities are all located within a walking distance from each other. A genuine spirit of an Athletes´ Village will be guaranteed for the expected 400-500 participants from more than thirty countries.”

Wrestling has a long tradition in Sothern Ostrobothnia, the area surrounding Kuortane. Indeed, many of the most internationally successful Finnish wrestlers come from this area. As a result, a lot of spectators and great atmosphere can be expected when competitions of the World University Wrestling Championships begin on October 2nd, 2012. Kuortane welcomes wrestling athletes and enthusiasts from all over the world to join the games!
