Attribution of the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades

BRUSSELS – 9 November 2013 – Today the second day of the FISU Executive Committee meeting focused on the attribution of the 2019 Universiades.

Yesterday the Bidding Cities had been granted a space to present their promotional booth. Today, each of them had the opportunity to deliver its final presentation before the Executive Committee during an hour.

 

Two cities were candidate for the organisation of the Winter Universiade: Krasnoyarsk and Valais. Although the Valais region had to withdraw its bid in September 2013, it intends to bid again for the 2021 WU. As regards the Summer Universiade, there were initially three candidates: Brasilia, Budapest and Baku.  As announced in October, Baku has withdrawn its candidature. Unfortunately, Budapest also had to withdraw its bid but intends to bid again for 2021 after the FINA World Championships. The Bidding Committee of Budapest made a one-hour presentation to explain the reasons of their withdrawal.

The city of Krasnoyarsk was the first one to go on stage and deliver its presentation. The Krasnoyarsk delegation was composed of Rustam Minnikhanov, the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Vitaly Mutko, the Sports Minister of Russia, Lev Kuznetsov, the Governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, Ekaterina Peshkova, the Vice-Governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, Oleg Matytsin, the President of the Russian Student Sports Union, Alexei Yagudin, a former Olympic figure skating champion and the ambassador of the bidding campaign, Mikhail Vdovin, a student of the Siberian Federal University and a volunteer of the bidding campaign of Krasnoyarsk, Alexander Uss, the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Krasnoyarsk region, Edkham Akbulatov, the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk, and Evgeny Vaganov, the Rector of the Siberian Federal University.

“Our task implies not only to organise the Universiade, but also to convey the FISU values, which are of major importance to us”, said Lev Kuznetsov, the Governor of the Krasnoyarsk region.

“We truly hope that the Universiade in Krasnoyarsk will be a significant legacy for Krasnoyarsk and Russia”, said Oleg Matystin, the President of the Russian Student Sports Union and FISU first Vice-President.

Vitaly Mutko, the Sports Minister of the Russian Federation, made the following declaration: “There are already a large number of athletes in the city of Krasnoyarsk, and now we hope to welcome students from all around the world.  The development of the youth and sport is of major importance for the government of the city. This is why we believe that Krasnoyarsk will successfully host the 2019 Universiade”.

 

The Brasilia delegation then made its presentation. The delegation was made up of Ivan Camargo, the Rector of the University of Brasilia, Luciano Cabral, the President of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), Julio Filgueira, the CEO of the Bidding Committee, Angelo Queiroz, the Governor of the Federal District of Brasilia, Aldo Rebelo, the Sports Minister of Brazil, Washington Mesquita, a Member of Parliament of the Federal District of Brasilia, Julio Ribeiro, the Secretary for Sports of Brazil, Ricardo Capelli, the National Secretary for Sports and Education, Mrs Vera Cynthia Alvarez, the Minister of the General Coordination of Sports Exchanges and Cooperation, as well as Mateus Fiorentini (National Student Union of Brazil).

“The Summer Universiade represents an important opportunity to promote university sport in Brazil”, Luciano Cabral, the President of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU) said.

“The Summer Universiade will leave a most-valuable legacy for the city and the Federal District of Brasilia, I am sure of that”, Angelo Queiroz, the Governor of the Federal District of Brasilia declared.

“Brazil would like to have the honour to host the Universiade, as Porto Alegre did in 1963. By attributing the organisation of the Universiade to Brasilia, you will enable students from all over the world to have an unforgettable sports experience”, Mrs Vera Cynthia Alvarez, the Minister of the General Coordination of Sports Exchanges and Cooperation said.

The Executive Committee then gathered to deliberate. FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien announced the name of the cities that will organise the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades during the attribution ceremony, which started at 20:00.

 

The organisation of the 29th Winter Universiade was naturally attributed to Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

“It is the most beautiful day in my life. I thank FISU for the confidence it has demonstrated by allowing us to organise the Universiade. We hope to see you in Krasnoyarsk. Welcome to Siberia!”,  Lev Kuznetsov, the Governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, exclaimed.

The 30th Summer Universiade was attributed to Brasilia, Brazil.

“Brazil has a long-standing tradition of university sport and I am convinced that Brasilia will organise an outstanding Universiade!” Aldo Rebelo, Sports Minister of Brazil, declared.

 

FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien said he was delighted with the selection of the host cities of the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades: “Siberia represents the future of Europe. Moreover, this region is part of a country – Russia – that banks a lot on the association of sport and education. As for Brazil, it is back on stage after a long absence. Attributing the Games to Brasilia will allow us to implement a development policy for sport and education not only in Brazil, but also throughout South America.”
