5 reasons why 500 days to Lucerne 2021 must be celebrated!

Winter Games 9 September 2019

LUCERNE – September 9 is a milestone moment in the heart of Central Switzerland, because the day marks 500 days to the Opening Ceremony of the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade.

On 21 January 2021, the FISU flag will be hoisted and the fire will be ignited at the Europaplatz in Lucerne, as more than 2000 of the world’s best university winter sports athletes will be gathered for the 30th edition of the Winter Universiade.

Lucerne 2021 will see the world’s largest winter multisport event for students return to the Swiss Alps for the first time since Villars 1962. The breathtaking city of Lucerne will be the event hub and home to the athletes’ village, with competitions taking place throughout iconic sports venues across Central Switzerland. The Universiade will see competition in ten sporting disciplines, contested across seven event venues.

So, with 500 days to go, we tell you why 500 is such an important number for many of the iconic venues of the 30th Winter Universiade!

5. Lucerne is cozy and compact, meaning one can easily take short bus rides to main venues like Universiade Park and the ice centre. Start counting: one, two… five hundred and you’ve arrived!

4. If you measure the distance to and from the Sursee ice rink in Ice-Hockey sticks, you’ll find that it takes 500 of them lined up end to end to get to the town hall. Simple maths.

3. You can also measure distance in steps of course, and 500 steps is all it takes to get from the Zug old town to the Bossard Arena, home to the men’s Ice-Hockey competition as well as the women’s finals and semifinals.

2. The stunning setting of Engelberg will host the very popular Curling competition and spectators who make the trip will also be able to visit Engelberg’s most famous tourist attraction – the Benedictine Monastery – which is just 500m away.

1. The Lenzerheide Biathlon Arena will host the Biathlon and Ski Orienteering competitions and at a 500-target distance is the jaw-dropping Lake Heidsee. Scorching action and cool waters.
