12th WUC Triathlon officially opens

BRASILIA – With almost all the participants athletes present in Brasilia, the Organizing Committee of the 12th World University Triathlon Championships organized the event opening ceremony, last night 17 April, at Centro de Atendimento ao turista, located at the Três Poderes Square. The ceremony was also attended by the Secretaries of Sports and Tourism of GDF, Célio René and Luiz Otávio, and delegates of FISU and CBDU.

The foreign and Brazilian athletes had a chance to try a cocktail of traditional fruits found in Brazil. They also got a chance to know each other better, before the competition starts on Sunday 20 April. Along the ceremony, the participants learned a bit more about the city’s history, designed by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Around 60 athletes from 13 countries, including Brazil will participate in the FISU event this Sunday. The Women’s race starts at 09h30 followed by the Men’s start at 11h00. The student-athletes begin with an open water swim of 1,500 m, in the Paranoá Lake, then a cycling track with 4 laps of 10 km, over the famous JK Bridge followed by a 10 km street race.
