Common bonds, uncommon cities: Chengdu 2021 comes for Lucerne 2021 visit

Summer Games 22 November 2019

With just over one year to go, the upcoming two Universiades in two venues of the world couldn’t be more different. When the organising committee of a Chinese mega metropolis meets the organising committee of a compact Swiss city, exciting insights come to light

The exchange between the two upcoming organising committees started with one common string: FISU invited all organizers of future Universiades to the 36th FISU General Assembly in Torino, Italy. Lucerne 2021 managing director Urs Hunkeler met Chengdu vice-mayor Wang Pingjiang and five other delegation members for the Chengdu 2021 Summer Universiade. While in the birthplace of the Universiades, Hunkeler spontaneously invited the Chengdu delegation to Lucerne when the Summer Universiade 2021 team expressed interest in a site visit to the upcoming Central Switzerland host city.

The one-day visit focused on the exchange of experiences the two 2021 organisers have had in their preparations for welcoming the world to their cities for the premiere international multi-sports events in the winter and summer sports disciplines.

Also, the possibilities of a presence of Chengdu 2021 in the context of the Winter Universiade 2021 were discussed. “Chengdu 2021 will certainly come to Lucerne in January 2021 with a larger delegation and participate in the Observer Programme,” Hunkeler said following the Tuesday meeting. “The extent to which they will use Lucerne to promote the Summer Universiade 2021 will become clear later. Either way, I am looking forward to further exchange with the representatives of Chengdu 2021.”
