Mongolian National University Championship draws over 2,000 student-athletes

ULAANBAATAR – Under management of the Mongolian Student Sports Federation (MSSF) and in cooperation with local universities, the National University Championship (NUC)-2018 started with judo competition March 3, 2018 and ended with tug-of-war on May 12, 2018. After two months of continuous organization, NUC Mongolia was comprised of 13 sport disciplines – basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, judo, handball, chess, futsal, table tennis, taekwondo, woodball and athletics in Ulaanbaatar city. Depending on competition and features, six competitions were held at sport facilities of universities, as for the athletics, table tennis, futsal, judo, handball, woodball and chess competition were held at respective designated facilities.

 

In total 2,165 student athletes (1,281 men and 884 women) from 37 universities from the capital city and provinces of Mongolia, 189 coaches and 106 referees participated in the NUC 2018 Mongolia.

 

 

This year one of the important features of the NUC Mongolia was that the competitions were named after the universities which hosted specific sporting competition of NUC at their campuses. Particularly, National University of Mongolia (NUM) organized the basketball, volleyball and cheerleading sport events in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Department of Physical Education, NUM. The universities that cooperated with MSSF were Mongolian National University of Education (Judo and Handball), Mon-Altius Physical Education Institute (Chess and Futsal), National Institute of Physical Education (Wrestling and Table tennis), Mongolian National Defense University (Taekwondo), Mongolian State University of Life Sciences (Woodball), Mongolian University of Science and Technology (Athletics), and “Avarga” Physical Education Institute (Tug-of-War).

 

The largest number of teams participated in following competitions : wrestling had 23 university teams, taekwondo had 19, basketball had 18, judo 16, volleyball and table tennis each had 15 university teams.

 

NUM, Mongolian State University of Life Sciences, National Institute of Physical Education and Mon-Altius Physical Education Institute successfully trained their athletes and participated in all 13 sport disciplines. In addition, student-athletes of the Mongolian State University of Life Sciences, “Avarga” Physical Education Institute, Mongolian National University of Education, Ikh Zasag International University and Mongolian National Defense University took part in more than 10 sport events.

 

For the first time since the NUC has been organized among Mongolian students, the final result of all participating universities were assessed by the quality of medals, which was another important feature of this year’s championship. In previous championships, the overall results were calculated by scoring system which consisted in summing up the number of medals received in each respective event.

 

This year the Mongolian National University of Education was awarded the first place winning 15 gold, 14 silver and 16 bronze medals in the National University Championship of 2018 in 13 different sporting events. The second place took the National Institute of Physical Education with 13 gold, 22 silver and 33 bronze medals. The Mongolian University of Science and Technology’s team is in third place with 11 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. The fourth place went to the “Avarga” Physical Education Institute winning 8 gold and 5 bronze medals, and in the fifth place is the Mongolian State University of Life Sciences students with 7 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze.

 

All participants of the National University Championship of Mongolia 2018 competed for 274 medals (79 gold, 79 silver and 116 bronze), representing 24 various universities from all over Mongolia and participated in one of the biggest student sporting event in the country.

 

The winners of this National University Championship 2018 are selected respectfully to participate in the Asian University Football Cup Championship on October in Jinjiang, China, and in the 3×3 Basketball Championship which will be held in July in Kuala-Lumpur, Malaysia. Students and teams who will take part in the World University Chess, Wrestling and Cheerleading Championships will be selected from National Championship.
