Finnish Student Sports Federation elects New President

HELSINKI – The General Assembly of the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) has elected Matias Vainio as President for 2015. Mr. Vainio is a 24-year-old history student from the University of Eastern Finland and is currently serving as Board Member at the Student Union of University of Eastern Finland (ISYY).

The General Assembly also elected the Federation’s Board for the following year. Teemu Palkki, Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) and Bennie Wardi, HAAGA-HELIA Student Union HELGA, were elected as Vice Presidents. Pekka Petäkoski from the Student Union of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (METKA) was re-elected a Member of Board.

The General Assembly also adopted the action plan for 2015. The action plan emphasizes strong lobbying ahead of the parliamentary elections in 2015 in order to strengthen the status of student sports and increase students’ physical activity in Finland. Another goal for 2015 is to increase the participation of women in the National Student Championships.

The General Assembly expressed their support for the continued collaboration of the SELL countries (Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and the SELL Games as an opportunity for all students to take part in and enjoy the atmosphere of an international sporting event, regardless of their level of skills.

The General Assembly also decided to apply for the membership of SETA – LGBTI rights in Finland, which is a national human rights NGO.

The meeting gathered more than 70 representatives of student unions and universities’ sports services in Helsinki on November 13–14, 2014. The Finnish Student Sports Federation warmly congratulates the new Board and thanks all participants of the General Assembly.
