NUSF Kazakhstan celebrates 6th National Winter Universiade

ALMATY – On 6 February started in Almaty (Kazakhstan) the 6th National Winter Universiade among universities of Kazakhstan. The competition was attended by 924 students from 34 universities from all regions of the country.

The opening ceremony of the Republican Universiade was attended by the Minister of Education and Science of Kazakhstan Aslan Sarinzhipov, silver medallist of the Olympic Games in Vancouver Elena Khrustaleva, President of the Student Sports Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and FISU Assessor Kairat Zakiryanov. In addition, there were honorary guests as Olympic Champions Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov, Yermakhan Ibraimov and winner of the World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling Almat Kebispaev.

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony was held in the Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex. The National Winter Universiade was from 6 to 17 February. The sports programme included 10 sports: cross-country skiing, ski orienteering, biathlon, Presidential all–around, ice hockey, ski jumping, alpine skiing, snowboard, speed skating and short-track. There were 103 medals won. The National Winter Universiade was held in a very high level.

President of the Student Sports Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kairat Zakiryanov expressed confidence that all the winners of the National Universiade will represent Kazakhstan at the 2017 WU.

“Last year at the Winter Universiade in Spain and Slovakia, our national team for the first time took the third place, at home we should at least repeat this achievement,” professor Zakiryanov added.

The Ice Hockey game between Kazakh Academy of Sport and Tourism and the Eurasian National University ended 8-4

The Kazakh Academy of Sports and Tourism ended in first place with the most medals won. The second place went to the delegation of the Pavlodar State Pedagogical Institute. The third spot was divided between the students of the Kazakh National Agrarian University and the North-Kazakhstan State University named after M. Kozybaev.

During the opening and closing ceremonies, participants and guests enjoyed colourful performances on the ice and followed by a concert.
