Lago di Ledro ready for 7th WUC Match Racing

FISU 28 June 2014

LAGO DI LEDRO – Everything is set on Lake Ledro shores to begin the 7th edition of the World University Match Racing Championship – sailing discipline identified with America’s Cup – that from tomorrow 29 June to Saturday 5 July will see here compete the best university sailors of the world.

Tomorrow, therefore, the event will open with a spectacular opening ceremony with the participation of athletes, their staffs, officials of international delegations of FISU, CUSI, CUS, CONI etc., representatives involved in the event, volunteers. The event is scheduled for h. 21 in Müllheim Square in Pieve.

Races will start at 9:30 on Monday morning, 30 June. Here a detailed programme of the event.

Meanwhile, the international student-sailors (from Australia, Brazil, France, Great Britain, Singapore, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan, Poland, Turkey, Russia and the United States, and of course from different regions of Italy) are reaching Ledro Valley, ready to take up the legacy of the World Cup raced two years ago in Nice (FRA) and challenge those who had been the victorious nations: Brazil (for Female category) and Australia (for Open category). ‘Our goal is obviously to win also this year’,  Marina Jardim, Brazilian skipper at her second WUC, with colleague Juliana Poncioni commented. ‘But in any case it will be very nice to compete and meet new people, learn from others, because that’s what we need. Races on a lake are very nice because unlike those on the sea, they are more challenging, with constantly changing currents and winds.’

A few more hours and then the sport will again return in the spotlight, in an excellent Italian location to which – by virtue of the proven organization in international sailing events – FISU was granted a record: 27 crews, instead of 24 as in the previous editions, will be competing in Match Racing regattas of this 7th edition.
