LAUSANNE – In just four days’ time, the biggest celebration of university sport worldwide will kick into action. The best thing about the International Day of University Sport, celebrate annually is that it encourages all university students to be active and participate in fun and games.
Every year, invariably there are some standout activities – some for the sheer number of participants, others for creativity. So, with 100 hours to go and counting, we look back at some of the best moments of IDUS 2018.
5. Hungary’s huge participation
Last year, 180,000 students participated in more than 160 IDUS-related activities organised by the Hungarian University Sports Federation and we’re betting on them to do it again. This time, they have included institutions in remote areas and the countryside, where many interesting activities have been planned for approximately 30,000 students.
4. Malawi found its mojo
The College of Medicine in the city of Blantyre celebrated IDUS 2018 by hosting the ‘Chancellors Trophy’ tournament. The tournament was a mini-Universiade in itself as it consisted of competitions in football, netball, basketball, volleyball, chess, weightlifting, martial arts, squash, tennis, hockey, pool, table tennis and athletics! Leaving virtually no stone unturned, all the sports had both male and female categories. The event was free and open to everyone. Full marks.
3. Taipei thought differently
The Students Sports Union (SSU) of Chinese Taipei took a creative spin on IDUS and thought of introducing their students to sports broadcasting. The participants were taken to the Fox Sports studios in the city where they learned first-hand how top end international sports is brought directly into the living rooms of millions of viewers.
2. FISU got Lausanne in Motion
FISU, local universities and the city of Lausanne turned the iconic Ouchy waterfront into a hub of sports activities. The third edition of the Lausanne in Motion festival brought out residents of the Olympic Capital in droves, to mingle with the students from the world-renowned universities based here, all in the name of sport!
1. Bosnian Student Ambassador stole the show
In Bosnia & Herzegovina, the International Day of University Sport may have been celebrated on a small scale, but what FISU is most proud of, is that it was almost entirely organized and executed by FISU’s Student Ambassador Biljana Cvijanović. A 3×3 basketball tournament was held on the campus of the University of Banja Luka as Cvijanović ensured that IDUS did not go unnoticed. Kudos!
