100 days to go: The train to Krasnoyarsk picks up speed!

'Universiade Train' unveiled on the Moscow Metro

With 100 days to go for the eagerly awaited 2019 Winter Universiade in the heart of Siberia, all roads and all tracks now lead to Krasnoyarsk for the winter sport spectacle that starts on 2 March 2019.

The Russian capital Moscow witnessed the official launch of the branded train for the 29th Winter Universiade, whose design illustrates Siberia's unique natural landscape and culture, as well as displays the logos, marks and mascot of the Winter Universiade 2019, the friendly U-Laika.

On their daily commute from now on, the passengers of the train will be able to learn more about the Universiade venues and the sports included in the programme of the Games. The information about the upcoming Winter Universiade 2019 is presented in two languages, Russian and English. A total of five train carriages are now running daily on the Koltsevaya Line of the Moscow Metro.

The event was attended by Olga Golodets, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, who said, “We are just a few months away from the start of the Winter Universiade 2019, which our country will host for the first time in history. About 3,000 athletes and officials from more than 50 countries will take part in these Games. It will be a vibrant and significant event for the whole country. We invite everyone to the Winter Universiade Krasnoyarsk 2019!”

The concept for the design of the train was developed by winners of a contest held for design students. The contest was organized by Universiade partner Nornickel. The winning team comprised of students from the AN Kosygin Moscow State Textile University. They created the visual imagery, national ornaments and graphic elements that were finally utlisied in decorating the branded train of the Winter Universiade 2019.

"Participating in the contest was an initiative of the first-year students," said Ekaterina Gurova, Director of the AN Kosygin Moscow State Textile University. “Thanks to the contest, we are very pleased that the students were exposed to the national traditions, learned a lot about Siberia and contributed to the message of the Winter Universiade 2019.”

The Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade will be from 2-12 March next year, where the world’s best student athletes will compete for 76 sets of medals in 11 sports: Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Hockey, Alpine Skiing, Curling, Snowboard, Figure Skating, Short Track Speed Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ski Orienteering and Bandy.

FISU wishes the athletes and the Universiade train a pleasant journey to March 2019! See you in Krasnoyarsk! Everything you want to know about Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade can be found here.
