It’s here! The season opener of the 2020 World University Championships gets underway tomorrow in Amsterdam, Netherlands, with the FISU World University Speed Skating Championship. The international hopefuls have arrived and have started skating their first few rounds to get a feel of the spectacular outdoor Jaap Eden ice rink. This unique rink, opened in 1961, is in fact the oldest artificial ice rink in the world that’s still in use. 70 participants from 16 countries will battle it out over the next four days, for the title of world university speed skating champion. The speed skaters will battle each other as well as the elements, as in an open ice rink in the Netherlands, weather can be rough.

SS competition scheduleThe excitement starts on Monday evening itself, with the opening ceremony marking the official kick off. The first starting shot will be fired on Tuesday, 10 March at 12.50 PM for the ladies’ 3000m race. In the four days that follow, all traditional speed skating disciplines will be skated, as well as a Mixed Team Sprint on Friday, where women and men will compete together in mixed teams.

The week will end with the Mass Start followed by the closing ceremony. For the detailed spectator programme including side events please click here. The venue is divided in the competition area, participants area, spectator’s area, press area and a mixed zone, to ensure the best possible experience for all. The venue-plan can be found here.

All the action will be streamed live on FISU.TV and the event organisers will keep you posted on everything that happens behind the scenes with interviews, photos, videos and more on Facebook and Instagram.

All information like starting lists, results and detailed time schedules can also be found on the App Sportity under the event code WUCSS2020. The app is available on both android as well as iPhone in the Appstore.
