Women’s individual medalists (photo credit Mario Sofia)Carla Tejedo Mulet of Spain rode a 3 under score of 69 in final round to win the women’s individual event at the 2022 Torino FISU World University Championship Golf. The Spaniard led the tournament from round one and finished at a 10 under par 278 to claim the gold medal. Her countrywoman Carolina López-Chacarra Coto wound up two strokes back at -8 to take second place. Italy’s Caterina Don won bronze on home soil going 3 under par for the tournament, held at Royal Park I Roveri at La Mandria.

(photo credit Mario Sofia)Tejedo Mulet and López-Chacarra Coto, along with teammate Julia Lopez Ramirez, also cruised to victory for Spain in the women’s team competition winning by an incredible 28 shots. The three combined to go 20 under for the tournament at 556. Silver went to Chinese Taipei at eight over, and bronze to Japan who finished at +11.

“I am happy to have won this world championship both individually and as a team. I couldn’t have wished for a better team, and I couldn’t be happier and prouder than this. Long live Spain!” said Tejedo Mulet following the tournament.

Yubin Jang of South Korea had led the men’s individual event following each of the first three rounds but was forced to a playoff on the final day by Japan’s Ryunosuke Furukawa. A birdie by the Korean on the first playoff hole secured his win and the gold medal with a four day total of -15. Furukawa goes home with the silver medal while Italian Giovanni Manzoni ended up two strokes back at -13 to win bronze in his home country.Team Japan men (photo credit Mario Sofia)

Furukawa, while unable to win gold in the men’s individual tournament, did finish in first along with teammates Kosuke Suzuki and Taiga Semikawa in the men’s team event at -27. Republic of Korea claimed silver also at -27, with the tiebreak going to Japan as their third placed and non-counting golfer for the day, Taiga Semikawa, shot 70 compared to Korea’s third placed player Yoo Hyunjoon’s 72. The host Italians capped off playing in their home country winning bronze, five shots off Japan’s pace at -22.

I am very happy individually, of course, but also as a team. Sharing this experience with college athletes from other countries enriched me a lot. It was a wonderful sporting adventure!”

Eighteen nations with 133 athletes and officials competed at the 2022 FISU Championship Golf in what serves as part of the road to the Torino 2025 FISU Games Winter. The flag has now been handed over to Seinäjoki, Finland which will serve as the host of the 2024 FISU World University Championship Golf.
