The next phase of the 2022 edition of the FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy (FVLA) will get underway online this Friday 2 September, streaming from the FISU offices in Lausanne, Switzerland beginning at 12:00 CET. These two days of sessions provide emerging leaders the opportunity to hear lectures and seminars from experts in university sport so that they can bring this new knowledge back to their continental (CUSF) and national university sports federations (NUSF).
Those that participate in the Academy then become FISU Student Ambassadors, a programme which is celebrating its fifth anniversary. As student ambassadors they then work to create plans to work with their NUSF or CUSF to further grow and develop university sport in their country or continent.
“With less than a week left to FVLA 2022, we are very busy getting ready for the event with the FISU Education and Development,” said FISU Student Ambassadors programme coordinator Albina Rakhmatullina. “I am proud to say that among fantastic speakers with great experience, we have many FVLA alumni now working in different companies and their national university sports federations. After FVLA we will welcome newly appointed FISU Student Ambassadors for season 2022/23 who will then spread the spirit and word of university sports all over the world.”
Over 20 speakers will present on a range of topics and will include FISU Acting President Leonz Eder who will greet participants during the opening ceremony, and Luciano Cabral, FISU Acting First Vice-President and President of CBDU (NUSF Brazil), who will be part of a panel of experienced sport leaders and athletes.
One FVLA participant is Nicholas Mallia from Torrens University Australia and UniSport Australia, who is looking forward to the two days of sessions. “My expectations for the FVLA 2022 [are] to learn about leadership, roles associated within my NUSF. Along with a lot of soft and practical skills relating to my delivery at UniSport Australia and Torrens University, [I look forward to] listening to some extraordinary guest speakers with participants’ interests at heart,” said Mallia.
Education to develop the next generation of university sport leaders is an important mandate of FISU and the FVLA continues that great legacy, as many will experience firsthand starting this Friday.
